When an electrical storm hits during a late-night talk show, a radio DJ receives persistent calls from a mysterious caller telling her stories of electrical appliances affected by the storm. This wraparound was a great premise and works well to hold the various tales together with purpose and direction. Each short is helmed by different directors, yet centre round a shared nightmarish theme of how technology could harbour malevolent intent. We have gamers slaughtering each other in VR, crazed Alexa's, haunted exes, folk horror inspired twisted nightmares, men obsessed with double cooked bread, the most macabre of game shows, and a sentient adult toy who wreaks carnage on a married couple. Virus Detected balances some wonderfully outlandish and unique ideas with a dark reflection of our dependence and obsession with technology. There's also flashes of comedy scattered throughout, making this a truly unmissable watch. Currently on the film festival circuit, we can only hope for distribution soon as this anthology is simply too good not to be seen.
